English Language Arts

Photo of studentsIn the face of changing social realities, English Language Arts teachers have redefined, reformed language arts curriculum to be more relevant, representative, and culturally responsive. Hence, classes promote multiple voices, ethnicities, authors, and ways of knowing would reflect the experiences and perspectives of all students, while responding to the cultural diversity within public schools.

The integration of multicultural and global literature are windows to the world and powerful tools for global consciousness and social action.

Grades K-5

TUSD provides a culturally relevant, literacy based approach to reading and writing at all grade levels. The curricula align with the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards (AZCCRS) and prepare students for level grade level appropriate assessments. Students, even in the early grades, are focused readers and writers.

Grades 6-12

Students learn best when they are actively engaged with rigorous and relevant lessons that are taught and assessed by highly qualified and caring teachers. The English Language Arts (ELA) curricula are driven by standards-based learning outcomes and measured by aligned assessments that inform instruction. The curricula are designed to explore big ideas, essential questions, and promote enduring understandings. Technology is integrated into the curricula to promote 21st Century skills that help students solve real-life, complex problems.

Multicultural adaptations to math instruction have helped to bridge gaps which may exist between students' cultural backgrounds and the academic content. Math curriculum:

  1. Incorporates the math contributions of people from multiple cultural backgrounds, such as Arabic and Mayan contributions to numbers.
  2. Uses experiential activities.
  3. Emphasize the real-world applications and benefits of the lesson content.
  4. Creates an enthusiastic environment where students have positive experiences with math and science.
  5. Understands an individual bias about who is or is not able to comprehend math and science, and provide opportunities to all learners.

The curriculum helps students to see the connection between their local and global environments and think conscientiously and critically about their roles in these relationships. Tucson Unified multicultural science education emphasizes dynamic inquiry and exploration, and instruction that represents a variety of traditional and historical viewpoints. By presenting science as an ongoing, creative story with many parts, students will see their own cultural experiences reflected in the lesson.

Social Studies

The multicultural Social Studies curriculum takes a critical examination of society by combining multicultural education with an inquiry-based approach to social studies. This approach draws on the essential questions that education must involve students in examining questions about the problems facing their own communities, and the focus on social issues. In this approach to TUSD's multicultural social studies, continuously frame and examine complex and controversial questions about United States society and the contemporary world, and use these questions to direct their examination of the past.
